Introduction
The aviation industry in India has two distinct sectors: Commercial and Military. Commercial aviation includes passenger airlines and cargo planes, international air services, air taxi and charter operations being major function. Military aviation includes the Indian Air Force and the aviation arms of the Navy and Army. The Commercial airlines have typical Organizational structure. This includes airlines operations, maintenance marketing and finance divisions. The job of pilot comes under the airlines operation division. This profession, comprising of Captain and Co-pilots constitutes the highly rated and one of the most adventurous career. It is a specialized job and requires intensive training. This profession demands a lot of time, dedication, patience, sacrifice.

Nature of Work
Pilots fly aircrafts on long and short flights. One hour before take-off, pilots check pre-flight plans. These include the route to be taken and height maintained and also includes meteorological information. Pilots have to do complex calculations of take-off and landing and they have to work out the fuel needed for distance to be traveled and height and weight to be maintained. They check equipments and instrument and do briefing to the flight crew. On flight-pilots have to interpret the data on instrument and control. The most difficult part for a pilot job is Landing and Take-off. Pilots maintain contact with air traffic controls and cabin crew through-out the flight. They also speak at intervals to passengers, giving them information over the public address system on speed and height, details of ground areas they are flying over. Duties are shared usually with one co-pilot, After Landing the aircraft is taxied to its final position and engines are shut down by pilots. Later they prepare a flight report, noting any problems or instrument difficulties.

Personality
Pilot is a profession of discipline, patience, responsibility, punctuality, commitment and dedication. The job requires a lot of hard work, stamina, alertness of mind, adaptability to follow difficult time schedules, ability to think in crisis, good team spirit etc. Apart from possessing these qualities, the persons willing to take up this as profession, should be calm, pleasant, compassionate, understanding and technically sound.

Training Process
Basic qualification for pilot training is successful completion of 10+2/equivalent with 50% marks in Physics and Maths. The applicant should have completed 17 years of age. The first step in Pilot training is acquiring of Student Pilot Licence (SPL). Thereafter he can start flight training to get Private Pilot Licence (PPL). This includes 60 hours of flying comprising 20 hours of dual flying, 20 hours of solo flying and 5 hours cross country flying. Theoretical examinations have to be passed in subjects like Air Regulation, Navigation, Aviation Meteorology, Aircraft and Engines, After PPL another 190 hours of flying training is required for Commercial Pilot's Licence (CPL) i.e., a consolidated 250 hours of flying training. A flight radio operator’s licence and radio telephone licence have to be obtained. During CPL, the candidate should have exposure to a range of aircraft and fulfill other conditions like specified hours of solo flying, cross country flying and height flying. Theoretical papers have to be cleared and medical tests passed. It usually takes 2 to 3 years before required flying hours and classroom learning are completed. Entry to the PPL course is through an entrance test conducted at certain centres. The test is based on subjects like English, General Knowledge, Maths, Physics and Chemistry. Applications are called in April and sent to The Director General of Civil Aviation (Training Section) Technical Centre, Opp. Safdarjang Airport, New Delhi-110 003.
The Basic Prerequisites

You must complete your Class XII under the 10+2 system or its equivalent with a minimum of 50 per cent marks in Mathematics and Physics

You must be minimum 16 years of age to be eligible for a Private Pilot License and 17 for a Commercial Pilot License.

Your vision in one eye must be perfect. In general medical terminology, it is called 6/6 eyesight. In the other eye, you could have an imperfection of 6/9, which must be correctable to 6/6

General physical fitness is mandatory. You must be free of any disease that can hamper normal function.

The route to being a commercial pilot

First, zero in on a good flying club.

Then you begin the stepwise training process.

Student Pilot License

You must appear for a written theory examination in Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology and Air Navigation and Air Technical.

You must obtain a medical certificate of fitness from doctors designated by the Director General of Civil Aviation. Only two bodies in India -- Air Force Central Medical Establishment in New Delhi and the Institute of Aviation Medicine, Bangalore -- are authorized to give you a medical fitness certificate.

You have to get a security clearance.

You will need to appear for an oral examination and an aptitude test.

If the medical clearance comes through and you clear the exams, you will be granted the SPL.

Damages: You must furnish a bank guarantee of Rs 10,000.

Private Pilot Licence

Post attaining the SPL, you will be assigned an instructor to start flying lessons. You will be taught the basics of flying and your instructor will accompany you on flights.

After about 15 hours of flying with an instructor, e.g. dual flying, you can fly solo and go cross-country as well.

To obtain a Private Pilot License, you have to fly a minimum of 60 hours. Of this, at least 20 hours should be solo flying and 5 hours should be cross-country flights.

You will also need to appear for the written theory examinations in subjects like Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation, Aircraft Engines and Seamanship.

You will need to obtain the medical fitness certificate from the AFCME or IAM.

You must be at least 17 years old.

You must have passed Class XII or equivalent exam with Physics, Maths and Chemistry as your subjects.

Damages: Per hour cost of flying is quite steep: about Rs 3,500.
To get a PPL, you need at least 60 hours of flying. Thus the total cost of obtaining a PPL will be a cool Rs 2 lakh (Rs 200,000)!

Commercial Pilot License

This license is the most important license to become a commercial pilot.

The age bracket for getting a CPL is between 18 years and 30 years.

You need a minimum of 250 hours of flying to get this license. Of this, 150 hours have to be solo flying, 25 hours of cross-country flying, 10 hours of instrument flying (which means you rely only on the plane's instruments for flying without looking at the horizon or external assistance), and 5 hours of flying in the night.

A medical certificate from ACFME or IAM and theory tests in Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Air Navigation, Technical and Planning are other important parts of the process.

You can get the Private Helicopter License if you complete 40 hours of flight training with 15 hours of solo flying. Written exams on basic aviation subjects have to be taken.

To get a Commercial Helicopter Pilot License, you need 60 hours of flight training as well as appear for a written exam.

Helicopter pilots are hired by public and private sector corporates as well as security agencies.

Damages: A steep Rs 9 lakh (Rs 900,000). For a Commercial Helicopter Pilot License, the cost could go up to Rs 13 lakh (Rs 1.3 million)!

Airline Transport Pilot's License

The above mentioned licenses can only allow you to fly as a co-pilot. If you want to take over as a captain, you need the Airline Transport Pilot's License, which is the highest aviation license available.

Along with clearing written papers, you also need to clock a total of 1,500 flying hours and take medical tests.

Damages: It costs Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 per hour. Often, the airline you work for may sponsor the training costs.

Additional training and information

Once you get the CPL, you may want to go in for multi engine training.

After 7 to 10 hours of multi engine training on a certain aircraft, your license will carry an endorsement of the aircraft you have flown.

All the above licenses need to be renewed regularly. You must adhere strictly to medical tests.

Fly one hour after your license expires, and you will be banned from flying ever again!

Medical conditions and regular exam clearances notwithstanding, a pilot can continue in this career till 61 years.

These days, you could even try for a scholarship. Please visit www.scholarshipsindia.com for details.

Damages: Multi engine flight training is very expensive and can cost anything between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 per hour.

Prospects:

After getting an Indian license, one can apply to the airlines for jobs. One may join as a pilot and work upwards to become a Commander. In Indian Airlines, it may take 8-10 years to get command of a jet aircraft. Private airlines may take only half the time, since the flying hours that the pilot puts in is much higher. These days there is a shortage of pilots and foreign airlines such as Gulf Air, Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Air Lanka frequently hire Indian pilots. With Asia opening up, salaries have multiplied and it is not surprising to hear of a monthly salary of $6,000 after taxes (about Rs 2 lakh) or even a higher figure of $12,000. Apart from this, one may get to fly a bigger and more modern aircraft with a foreign airline.
A word of caution may be in order here. Many pilots switched to private airlines a few years back, lured by high salaries. With many such airlines folding up and running into losses, the high salaries have not been sustainable. In the past year, Damania was sold while Modiluft and East West were in serious trouble and were grounded due to various problems. This is not to say that the prospects are poor for a pilot. The domestic private airlines may be failing because of restrictive rules and this has been pointed out by owners of airlines. Government policy is also very confused and a proposal of a tie up between Tatas and Singapore Airlines has not been allowed by the government. The country's privatization programme is clearly aimed at protecting the government monopoly. So the career opportunities at present are limited to Air India and Indian Airlines and foreign airlines.
Pilot Aptitude Test :
The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Akademi (IGRAU) is the Premier flying institute in India. The Akademi offers opportunity to ascertain ones aptitude for flying through the Pilot Aptitude Test. The assessment report is issued immediately after the test
