Technical and Non-Technical Cadre Examination
The management cadre of the Indian Railways consists of Class I and Class II Gazetted Officers. Direct recruitment to the Class I Railway services is made through the Union Public Service Commission on the basis of annual competitive examinations. Recruitment to the Indian Railway Traffic Service (IRTS) and the Indian Railways Accounts Service (IRAS) is done on the result of the Civil Services Examination and that to the Indian Railway Service of Engineers (IRSE), Indian Railway Service of Electrical Engineers (IRSEE), Indian Railway Services of Signal Engineers (IRSSE) and Indian Railway Store Service (IRSS) is made on the basis of the combined Engineering Service of Mechanical Engineers, there is a dual method. Approximately 50 per cent of the candidates are recruited through the Combined Engineering Services Examination. The remaining 50 per cent are recruited as special class Apprentices for which the UPSC conducts a separate competitive examination every year.

So far as the recruitment to Class II services is concemed, the entire Class II service is manned by personnel promoted from subordmate ranks from Class III by a process, of selection on the basis of merit. Class III service is composed of literate class of employees, both technical and non-technical. These cover a large number of categories such as Clerks, Station Masters, Ticket Collectors, Guards, Drivers,Workshop Chargemen, Foremen, etc. Initial requirement to technical Class III services in the Engineering Signalling and Telecommunication Engineering and electrical departments are of two types, namely, one to the class of skilled tradesmen and the other to the class of initial supervisors, Chargemen, Assistant Inspectors of Ways and Works, Assistant Signalling and Telecommunication Inspectors, etc. The formers are drawn from trade apprentices and the later recruited from candidates having diploma qualification in the upper branch of Engineering speciality.

Recruitment of the non-technical categories in Class III services, i.e., Clerks, Assistant Station Masters, Ticket Collectors, Train Clerks, etc., is done through direct recruitment to these categories by a competitive examination conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards. These Boards are located at Allahabad, Ahmedabad, Ajmer, Chandigarh, Jammu, Gorakhpur, Patna, Guwahati, Calcutta, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Trivandrum, Bangalore, Secunderabad, Mumbai, Bhopal, Malda, Ranchi, etc. The Boards advertise the vacancies through Newspapers/ Employment News and conduct both written examinations and interviews.

Details Regarding Selection Procedure How to Apply

Candidates can apply through the application forms published the daily Newspapers or Employment News. Application forms can also be obtain from the private agencies as long as their format is same as issued by the Recruiting Board.

Other Information
Method of Selection: The Written Test may be generally in conformity with educational standard prescribed for the post including English, Arithmetic, General Knowledge and General Intelligence. The test may be subjective-cum-objective/ multiple choice type. Candidate should possess knowledge of current events and matters of general interests particularly related to India including Indian Railways.Depending upon the number of vacancies the candidates upto the required number who satisfy the eligibility criteria, may be called for interview as applicable in order of merit.

Final selection may be based on the total marks obtained in the Written Test and Interview.

The candidate selected may be absorbed depending on vacancies available af successful completion of prescribed training as per the rules.

The final appointment of the candidates will be subject to their being found medically fit in appropriate Medical Classification of Railways. They may be considered in due course for promotion to higher grades including supervisory levels according to rules/orders in force from time to time.

For technical categories the Written Test will comprise of the technical subject to the Diploma/Degree level according to qualifications prescribed.

For Educational Qualifications and age limit please refer to the advertisement issued by the concerned Railway Recruitment Board as they vary. Examination Fee: The fee for various/categories of posts varies from Rs 20/-to Rs 30/-.

RPF Sub-Inspectors / Constables Exam
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) Central Selection Board invites application from unmarried Indian male eligible candidates for the posts of

A: Sub- Inspector in the Executive Branch and Fire Service Branch; and from unmarried male an female eligible candidates for the posts of B: Constables.

Age limit for RPF Sub-Inspectors/Constables Exam:
Age Limit: Between 20 and 25 years for Sub-Inspectors. 18 to 25 years for Constables. Relaxation of upper age limit is as per rules.

Minimum Educational Qualification For Executive Branch:
Bachelor's Degree or equivalent from a recognised University.

Minimum Educational Qualification For Fire Service Branch:
Must have passed Intermediate/Higher Secondary (10 + 2) with Science and Sub.Officers Course or its equivalent Diploma in Science or Fire Fighting

Minimum Educational Qualification For Constables:
High School or equivalent.

Plan of Examination

General Note about Examination Scheme
Plan of Examination: For Sub-Inspectors in Executive Branch and Fire Service Branch. The Preliminary Efficiency Test (PET) and Written Tests will be held the Examination Centre of the Zonal Railways. Candidates who fulfil the prescribed standards relating to height and chest shall be put through PET. Those who qualify in PET shall be put through Written Tests in General Knowledge, English and Essay.

Optional Subjects and Syllabus
(a) General Knowledge: The paper will be of objective type. Questions will be asked on past/current affairs, History, Geography, Hindi, Mathematics and Science. Duration: One hour. Total Marks: lOO.

(b) General English: Questions will be set on Grammar, Precis Writing, Correction of Sentences, Annotation of selected Paragraphs/Poems, etc.
Duration: One hour. Maximum Marks: 50.

(c) Essay can be written either in English or in Hindi in 300 words.
Duration: One hour. Maximum Marks: 50.

Other Information Regarding Plan of Examination: For Constables:
For candidates who qualify the Physical Efficiency Tests, a Written Test will be held comprising of General Knowledge and Current Affairs, IQ and Essay. Candidates who quality will be called for viva-voce.

Physical Standards for RPF Sub-Inspectors/Constables Exam:
Physical Standards:
(a) Height Minimum: 165 cms (160 cms for SC/150cms for ST/165 for Ex-S); Height Minimum for Females: 157 cms for General/SC/ST/OBC;

(b) Chest Minimum: 80 cms (76.2 cms for SC/ST) with expansion of 5 cms;

(c) Weight Minimum: 50 kg for SC and 48 kg for ST.

Note: Height of Gorkhas, Garhwalis, Kumaonese, etc., shall not be less than 160 cms (155 cms for females).

Medical: Vision normal without glasses. Candidates having flat feet, knock knee,squint eye or any other bodily defect shall not be eligible for appointment.

Note: Those selected will have to undergo a Medical Examination. The finally selected candidates will have to undergo a rigorous training in the event of selection.Stipend and allowance will be paid during training.

Vocational Course in Railway Commercial Exam
A two-year job-linked vocational course (full-time) in "Railway Commercial" at the +2 1evel had been introduced from the academic year 1991-92, as a Pilot Project. The Vocational Course in "Railway Commercial" is recognised by the Central Board of Secondary Education. On successful completion of the course, the students will normally be appointed directly as Commercial Clerks / Ticket Collectors on the Indian Railways after passing the medical examination, etc., subject to their attaining the minimum standards in the +2 examination.

The Vocational Course is conducted in 9 selected schools located at Delhi, Mumbai (2 schools), Chennai, Calcutta (2 schools), Secunderabad, Guwahati and Gorakhpur. Each of the selected school has only one section for the Vocational Course. The number of students admitted in each school shall not exceed 40.

COURSE CONTENTS:

Subjects: The subjects for the Vocational Course in "Railway Commercial" are as under:
1. English
2. A second language offered by the school OR Business Studies OR Economics
3. General Foundation Course
4. Railway Commercial Working (Theory and Practical)
5. Economics
6.
Accountancy

The students shall have the option to study an additional subject, out of the following electives:
1. Mathematics;
2. Business studies;
3. Introductory Computer Sciences (Theory and Practical);
4. Psychology.

Age limit for Vocational Course (Full-Time) in Railway Commercial:
Students must be 15 years of age or above but less than 18 years as on 1st June.

Examination Fee
A Crossed Postal Order for Rs 40/- drawn in favour of "Railway Recruitment Board" concerned.

Plan of Examination-Vocational Course (Full-Time) in Railway Commercial
General Note about Examination Scheme The Entrance Examination shall consist of a written test of objective type, multiple-choice questions, on General Knowledge, General English, General Arithmetic, General Intelligence / Psychology and Aptitude. The question papers will be set in English / Hindi excepting for the compulsory portion of General English. The written examination will be followed by an interview. Students qualifying in the Entrance Examination shall be offered admission to the Vocational Course on the basis of merit provided they pass the 10th class examination with at least 50% marks in the aggregate (40% in the case of SC/ST candidates) and subject to a medical examination. After competition of course appointments will be made in the Railway Service as Commercial Clerks/Ticket Collectors.

Reservation of Seats Rules in force will apply.

Apply only against the advertisement of concerned Railway Recruitment Board according to their format. The advertisements are generally published in October/November/December in Leading Newspapers and Employment News.

Rail Transport - Diploma Courses Exam
The Institute of Rail Transport (IRT) conducts every year 1 year Diploma Courses in:

A) Rail Transport and Management:
The Ministry of Railways have recognised this Diploma as an additional desirable qualification for recruitment to the Category of Assistant Station Masters, Traffic/Commercial Apprentices and Supervisory grades in the Electrical, Mechanical, Civil and Signal Engineering Departments.

This course is also very useful to Railway Employees and Employees of Trade Industry and Government connected with Railways such as Steel and Coal, Port Trust, Food, Fertilizer, POL, Cement, Non-ferrous Metal Industries and Export, etc.

B) Transport Economics and Management:

The Ministry of Railways have recognised this Diploma as an additional desirable qualification for recruitment to posts in the Commercial (including Marketing), Operating, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering Departments. This course is also likely to benefit fresh University Graduates desiring specialisation in Transport Economics and Management and seeking employment opportunities in the related fields and those who are already working in any Organisation/Ministries dealing with Transportation and desiring to upgrade their knowledge, etc., to improve their prospects in their respective Ministries and Enterprises.

COURSE FEE:
Rs 650/- (Rs 1800/- for Course B) for correspondence course without contact classes and Rs 1000/- (Rs 2600/- for Course B) with contact classes at selected Centres. The fee is payable at the time of enrolment.

COURSE CONTENTS (FOR COURSE A ONLY):
The Course consists of 63 lessons in 11 subjects consisting of Transport Economics, Management Concepts, Material Management, Financial, Commercial, Operating Management, Civil, Signal and Tele-communication, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering. Printed lessons are supplied by post. Course material is available both in English and Hindi.

C) Multi-modal Transport (Containerisation) and Logistics Management:
This course is recognised by the Ministry of Railways as an additional desirable qualification for recruitment to posts in the Commercial (including Marketing), Operating, Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering Departments. This course gives an unique opportunity to Managers and Staff and candidates seeking employment in all transport organisations, rail, road, sea, air, ports and also allied Institutions like Banking, Insurance, Warehousing, Freight Forwarders, Customs, Customs House Agents, Shipping lines, Shipping Agents to make themselves familiar with the latest developments in Inter-modal transport and containerisation.

COURSE FEE:
The course fee is Rs 1800/- for the correspondence course without
contact classes and Rs 2600/- with contact classes at selected centres. The fee is
payable at the time of enrolment.

D) Railway Engineering:
Approved by Railway Board, this course will also be very useful to serving railway employees as well as employees working in public/ private sector connected with railways such as RITES, IRCON, DMRC, Railway Sidings, Port Trust, Cement Industry, Fertilizers, firms engaged in construction of railway works as well as manufacturers of track components and ,allied railway products.

E) Port-Development & Management (2 years): This course given a unique opportunity to those who wish to join the Port Sector. It will also be of use to newly recruited executives in the Port Sector.

COURSE FEE:
The course fee is Rs 5000/- for the correspondence course without
contact classes and Rs. 6000/- with contact classes. Study material is available in
English only.

Minimum Educational Qualification for Rail Transport and Managemen & Transport Economics and Management:
Persons having a Degree in any subject or a minimum two-year Diploma in any Engineering Disciplines after passing Higher Secondary Examination are eligible for this course.

Minimum Educational Qualification for Railway Engineering:
3 years Diploma holder in any discipline of Engineering or a Graduate with Science or Maths as one of the subjects in Intermediate/ +2 of SSC. Science Graduate or a Serving Railway Employees with 5 years experience in Railways and having High School / SSC or equivalent qualification or having similar education/technical qualification as stated above for non-railway persons, may also apply.

Minimum Educational Qualification for Port-Development & Management (2 years):
Degree in any discipline from a recognised University.
