Civil Services Examination-India
The Civil Services Examination is one of the most prestigious competitive examination in the country. It consists of following stages:

1. Civil Services Preliminary Examination (Objective type) for the selections of candidates for the Main Examination.
2. Civil Services Main Examination (Written Examination).

The centers for the Civil Services Preliminary Examinations are : Agartala, Ahmedabad, Aizawl, Aligarh, Allahabad, Bangalore, Bareilly, Bhopal, Chandigrah, Chennai (Madras), Cuttack, Dehradun, Delhi, Dharwar, Dispur (Guwahati), Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Jodhpur, Jorhat, Kochi (Cochin), Kohima, Kolkata (Calcutta), Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Mumbai (Bombay), Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Pondicherry, Port Blair, Raipur, Ranchi, Sambalpur, Shillong Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum), Tirupati, Udaipur and Visakhapatnam.

Generally, the Preliminary Examination is held in My every year and the Main in October/November. The Civil Services Examination (Preliminary) 2006 will be held on May 14, 2006. The notification for the examination was issued on December 3, 2005 in the Employment News dated December 3-9, 2005.

Civil Service Examination-Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria:

1. You must be an Indian citizen.
2.
You should be a Graduate in any discipline from a recognized University.
3. You should have attained the minimum age of 21 years and must not have attained the age of 30 years as on August 1 of the year of examination. Due age relaxation is given to candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes. For details, see Employment Notice.

Civil Service Examination-Plan Of Examination
Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination

The Preliminary Examination consists of two papers of Objective - type (multiple-choice) questions. This examination is meant to serve as a screening test only. The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination by the candidates, who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Examination, are not counted for determining their final order of merit. Only those candidates, who are declared by the Commission to have qualified in the Preliminary Examination in a year, are eligible for admissions to the Main Examination of that year provided they are otherwise eligible for admission to the Main Examinations, which is held in October/November. The Main Examination consists of Written Examination and the Interview.

You must select any one of the following subjects as optional subject:

Note:
1.
Both the question papers are of objective - type (multiple-choice questions).
2. The question papers are set both in Hindi and English.
3. The Syllabi for the optional subjects is of the Degree Level.
4. Each paper is of two hours duration.
5. Paper I consists of 150 objective questions of 1 mark each. Paper II consists of 120 objective questions of 25 marks each.


1. Main (Written) Examination

The Written Examination consists of the following papers:
Papers I and II : General Studies for each paper
Paper III : Essay
Paper IV : Essay
Paper V :
One of the Indian Languages to be selected by the candidates from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution 300 marks
Papers VI, VII, VIII and IX :
Any two subjects to be selected from the list of the optional subjects. Each subject will have two papers.

Note:

1. The papers on Indian Languages and English are of Matriculation or equivalent standard and are of qualifying nature, the marks obtained in these papers are not counted for ranking.
2. The papers on Essay, General Studies and Optional Subjects of only such candidates are evaluated as attain such minimum standard as may be fixed by the Commission in their discretion for the qualifying papers on Indian Languages and English.
3. The Paper I on Indian Languages is, however, not compulsory for candidates hailing from the North - Eastern States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.

1. The question papers for the examinations are of conventional (essay) type

Each paper is of three hours duration.
3. You have the option to answer all the question papers, except the language papers, viz. Papers I and II above in any one of the languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution or in English.
4. Those Exercising the option to answer Papers III to IX in any one of the language included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution may, if they so desire, give English version within brackets of only the technical terms, if any, in addition to the version in the language opted by them. You, should, however, note that if you misuse the above rule, a deduction is liable to be made on this account from the total marks otherwise accruing to you.
5. The question papers other than language papers will be set both in Hindi and English.

Part-A
The paper on General studies will include questions covering the following fields of knowledge :
General Science
Current Events of National and International Movement
History of World Geography
Indian Polity and Economy,
General Mental ability

Questions on General Science cover gem neral appreciation and understanding of science, including matters of every day observation and experience, as is expected of a well educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific discipline.

In current events, knowledge of significant national and international events will be tested.

In history of India, emphasis is given in broad general understanding of the subject in its social, economic and political aspects. Questions on the Indian National Movement relate to the nature and character of the nineteenth century resurgence, growth of nationalism and attainment of Independence.

In Geography, emphasis is given on Geography of India. Questions on the Geography of India relate to physical, social and economic geography of the country, including the main features of Indian agriculture and natural resources.

Questions on Indian and Economy test your knowledge on the country's political system and constitution of India, panchayat raj, social systems and economic developments in India. On general mental ability, you will be tested on reasoning and analytical abilities.

Part-B Main Examination
The main Examination is intended to assess the overall intellectual traits and depth of understanding of candidates rather than merely the range of their information and memory. The scope of the syllabus for the optional papers is broadly of the Honors Degree level, i.e.; level Higher than the Bachelor's degree and lower than the Master's Degree. In the case of the Engineering and Law, the level corresponds to the Bachelor's Degree.

Compulsory Subjects English and Indian languages The aim of this paper is to test your ability to read and understand serious discursive prose, and to express your ideas clearly in English/ Indian Language concerned.

The pattern of questions would be broadly as follows :

Essay
You will be required to write an essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given. You will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange your ideas in orderly fashion, and write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.

General Studies

The nature and standard of questions in these papers will be such that a well-educated person will be able to answer them without any specialized study. The questions will be such as to test your general awareness of a variety of subjects, which will have relevance for a career in Civil Services.

Paper-I

a. History of modern India and Indian culture
The history of Modern India will cover history of the Country from about the middle of the nineteenth Century and would also include questions on important personalities who relating to Indian Culture will cover all aspects of Indian Culture from the Ancient to the Modern times.

b. Geography of India

In this part, questions will be on the physical, economic and social geography of India.

c. Indian Polity

This part will include questions on the Constitution of India, Political System and related matters.

d. Current National Issues and Topics of Social relevance

This part is intended to test your awareness of the Current National Issues and Topics of Social Relevance in the present day India such as:

Demography & Human Resource & related issues. Behavioral & Social issues & Social Welfare problems, such as child labor, gender equality, adult literacy, rehabilitation of the handicapped and other deprived segments of the society, drug abuse, public health, etc.

Law enforcement issues, human rights, corruption in public life, communal Environmental issues, ecological preservation, conservation of natural resources and national heritage.

The role of national institutions, their relevance and need for change.

Paper-II
India and the World
This part is intended to test your awareness of India's relationship with the world in various spheres, such as : Foreign Affairs, External Security and related matters, Nuclear policy and Indians Abroad.

Indian Economy

In this part, questions will be on the Planning and Economic Development in India, Economic & Trade Issues, Foreign Trade, the role and functions of I.M.F., world Bank, W.T.O., etc.

International Affairs and Institutions

This part will include questions on important events in World Affairs and on international Institutions.

Developments in the field of Science & Technology, Communications and Space

In this part, questions will test your awareness of the developments in the field of Science & Technology, Communication and Space and also basic ideas of Computers.

Statistical Analysis, Graphs and Diagrams

This part will test your ability to draw common sense conclusions from information presented in statistical, graphical or diagrammatical form and to point out deficiencies, limitations or inconsistencies.

Civil Service Examination :How to Prepare
How to Prepare
The Civil Service Examination tests a wide range of knowledge which requires intensive reading and up-to-date information of the world around you as well as your general awareness. You must prepare thoroughly in order to be able to answer all the questions. You should work out your own time schedule and strategy for answering all the questions in the prescribed time. Start from Q. no 1. and go on attempting them one by one, leaving the difficult questions in the first instance.

That is, you should answer only those questions in the first instance which do not require any extraordinary thinking. If you have sufficient time left, then you should go back to those questions which you had left unattempted in the first instance. Your aim should be to answer the maximum number of questions in the minimum possible time. You are advised not to spend too much time on any particular question at the cost of other questions. You should not worry at all if you have not been able to answer all the questions. However, in the end, you should start attempting those questions which you left earlier
